Coaching Ethics & Guidelines for Youth Teams
I. Ideals of Sportsmanship, Ethical Conduct and Fair Play

Remember that the coach is the primary influence on the players.

Be a living example of Sportsmanship.

Make participation fun.
-
Be a leader who cares about people and fair plan.
-
Maintain a positive approach.

Treat all players with the same respect, regardless of their skill level.

Teach players to respect their teammates.
-
Winning is desirable, but winning at any cost defeats the purpose of the game.
-
Remember, the game is supposed to benefit the kids, not the adults.
II. The Coach’s Personal Behavior

Actively discourage players’ use of profanity, tobacco, illegal drugs and alcohol.

Be an example; display self-discipline and avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol and profanity in the presence of players.

Be a good listener.

Communicate; stress the positive and avoid confrontations when possible.

Coaches should lead the post-game handshake.
III. The Coach’s Relationship with Officials

Respect the official’s judgment

Demonstrate dignity and self-control.

Immediately discipline any player who intimidates an official or displays unsportsmanlike behavior toward anyone.

Do not attempt to humiliate an opponent (for example: run up the score, verbally assault another coach or team)

Assume responsibility for parents’ behavior at games. Discuss behavior first with the parent, then if needed, the regional director.
IV. The Coach’s Training Guidelines

Attend coaching clinics.

Acquire coaching levels requited for the age group of your team.

Attend basic referee clinic.
-
Referee at some level for experience.
